WHAT WE OFFERCC Reading Club since 2018

Join us every Saturday from 2:30 to 6:30 PM at the CC Reading Club for a journey through literature. Our goal is to prepare students for standardized tests while helping them discover their own paths through reading.

Each week features an hour of guided reading with Cecilia, followed by two hours of group reading. The final hour focuses on SAT problem-solving techniques and grammar, taught by a Columbia University Ph.D. During these sessions, UBC students assist with grading. With over 100 novels on our reading list, there’s plenty to explore.

In the past six years, our graduates have gained admission to prestigious universities like Stanford and Yale.

THE CATCHER IN THE RYE

The Catcher in the Rye follows the story of Holden Caulfield, a disenchanted teenager who has just been expelled from prep school. As he navigates the streets of New York City over a few days, Holden grapples with feelings of alienation and loss while seeking connection and understanding. Through his candid reflections and poignant observations, the novel explores themes of identity, innocence, and the struggles of growing up.

ROBINSON CRUSOE

Robinson Crusoe tells the tale of a young man who defies his parents’ wishes to pursue a life at sea. After a shipwreck, he finds himself stranded on a deserted island, where he must rely on his ingenuity and resourcefulness to survive for 28 years. Through his adventures, Crusoe explores themes of isolation, resilience, and the human spirit’s quest for self-discovery.

JANE EYRE

Jane Eyre follows the journey of an orphaned girl who endures a harsh upbringing and seeks independence in a restrictive society. As a governess, she falls in love with Mr. Rochester, only to uncover dark secrets about his past. The novel explores themes of love, morality, and the quest for self-identity.

BRAVE NEW WORLD

Brave New World is a dystopian novel set in a future society that prioritizes technology, conformity, and pleasure over individuality and emotion. The story follows Bernard Marx, who feels out of place in this highly controlled world, as he questions the cost of happiness and stability. Through its exploration of themes like consumerism, freedom, and the dangers of totalitarianism, the novel serves as a powerful critique of modern society.
